We outline the artificial intelligence (AI) editorial policy for MSF International channels and platforms, including msf.org, on how and when we use AI.

Last updated: February 2026

Scope

At MSF, our communications teams working in our programme coordination offices and in the countries where we work produce the majority of the original content that is published across the digital platforms of MSF International.

These platforms include the website, msf.org, 1  MSF International accounts on X (Twitter) and Bluesky, WhatsApp in English and in Arabic, the international Facebook page, and the international LinkedIn page. We also co-manage the X/Twitter (@msf_arabic) and Facebook accounts in Arabic.

Much of the content published and disseminated across these platforms is curated and edited by a small team of people in MSF International’s communications team. This policy reflects the editorial work of the curation, editing, and publishing of that content. The policy also reflects on other content which is directly written and published by MSF International on our platforms, notably pages which explain who we are, what we do, and where and how we work.

It does not reflect the content that was created by our programme coordination and project-based communications teams.

Guidelines on AI use

Although small, the MSF International Editorial Unit is composed of trained and skilled writers and editors. To that end, we prefer to limit our use of generative AI for editorial purposes. However, any use of AI will always be reviewed by our team of editors before publishing. Any exceptional use of AI must be escalated to the Head of the International Editorial Unit.

For the MSF International Editorial Unit, here is what we will and won’t use generative AI for:

  • We may use generative AI to:
    • suggest headlines. These suggested ideas are then reviewed by an editor and used or adapted accordingly, with the editor having the final say. For example, we used AI as a starting point on headline suggestions for this article.
    • translate content. Longer-form content is usually translated by, or AI-generated translation is thoroughly reviewed by, a professional translator. However, some content, especially short texts such as photo captions, may be translated using generative AI. For example, the photo captions on this page in Portuguese were translated using generative AI.
    • suggest social media posts. All suggestions or ideas are then reviewed and adapted by an editor.
    • suggest summaries of content. For example, the summary at the top of this press release.
    • research suggested ideas on how to tailor or target content.
  • We don’t use generative AI to:
    • write articles. Any long-form content written by MSF International Editorial staff is written by a member of the editorial team.
    • edit content and articles that have been written by operational and project-based communications teams or others; this content is edited by our team.
    • produce photographic/photorealistic images. Our guidelines advise against using AI to produce visuals that imitate true photographic images of reality.

In addition, we may adapt the presented format of content to enable it to be better searched and read by Large Language Models (LLMs), which generate AI functions; one example is the presentation of content into FAQ style for this article.

This editorial policy will be reviewed regularly to account for evolving technologies and use cases.

  • Content on msf.org is available principally in English and Arabic, with some content available in French, Spanish, Portuguese, Ukrainian, and other languages as requested by our operational communications staff.
